Make Independent Taxation Optional

36% of Jersey's couples/families would face a materially higher tax bill under mandatory independent taxation.

The Jersey government’s proposed Independent Taxation legislation would have a significant negative financial impact on thousands of islanders. Independent taxation is an excellent option for many islanders, but mandating it would have a deeply unfair impact on others. One couple is set to see their tax bill rise by as much as 187% (Family B in the graphic - one spouse has cerebral palsy and is unable to work). For others, the increase in tax bill is 334% (Family C - a family with one working parent) over the next 10 years. These increases are not insignificant - they are often thousands of pounds per couple/family, raising an extra £9.5million annually for the government.

The stated purpose of updating the island’s tax legislation is to provide fairness for all, especially for women. But with the above consequences in view for over a third of the couples/families in Jersey (most of whom seem unaware of the impending tax implications), several islanders are starting to question the fairness of the draft legislation and whether Jersey’s politicians realise its negative impact on thousands of (mostly lower-earning) islanders.

If you're a politician reading this and thinking "but they've ignored the Compensatory Allowance," we haven't - see The Details page.
